You, me, Rocky Balboa, and email open rates?

What I’m going to share with you today fly’s in the face of what pretty much everyone else is telling you.

How many times have you heard “The money is in the LIST”?

You hear gurus saying it all the time. Heck, in the distant past I even said it.

Well, listen up because nothing could be further from the truth.

The money is NOT in the list.

The money is in the RELATIONSHIP that you build with your list.

The relationship is the real ASSET. In fact it’s the biggest, most powerful asset in your business.

And that is why it is so important that you nurture the people on your list and develop rapport.

The last broadcast message I sent a list of mine got an 11% open rate.

In a world of email overwhelm, while most marketers are complaining of ever decreasing open and click through rates, mine continue to increase.

In fact, that last email I sent got MORE than 11% open rate. I’ll tell you how in just a minute.

When I was a kid I struggled in school.

Nothing came easy for me. I literally had to work twice as hard to get half the grades that most other kids got..

This went on for years and so the school counselor recommended that my parents take me to see a specialist.

Long story short, it turns out they decided to label me with an “auditory learning disability”.

Yup, apparently I’m “learning disabled”. As in I can’t learn I must be an idiot.

…At least that’s pretty much what it meant to me.

Imagine what that did to my self-esteem? Let’s just say it left an emotional scar that lasted years.

Anyhoo, along came this movie called “Rocky”.

Chances are your have heard of it.

The story is a great inspirational story about a street level fighter who everyone considered to be a bum.

And one day the current world champ, Apollo Creed, and his publicity team decide to put on an exhibition fight between “The Champ”, and some no-name fighter.

That no-name fighter ended up being Rocky “The Bum” that nobody believed in.

Everyone told him that he was crazy to get in the ring with Apollo and that he was going to get his head knocked off.

But you know what?

Rocky didn’t see it that way. Rocky saw an opportunity.

Rocky believed in himself and what this opportunity could do for him.

In other words, he ignored the naysayers.

Do you ever find yourself surrounded by naysayers telling you to

“Get your head outta the clouds”.
“You can’t do that.”
“That won’t work.”
“Stop wasting your time.”
…Etc., etc.

Well let’s just say you’re not alone.

I was there too. I was labelled with “learning disabled”. Rocky was labelled a “bum”.

What’s your label? Was anyone ever been kind enough to give you one?

Or tell you “You’re crazy, stop wasting your time, you can’t do that?”

Well to hell with them all.

When I was in grade 8, the year before high school, the school Principal told my mother (in my presence)

“Glen would be lucky if he even graduates from high school. So you better help him prepare to get a menial job of some sort.”

That pissed me off.

You see, Rocky had a HUGE impact on my life. Rocky taught me to ignore the naysayers.

Screw them. you, me, and Rocky you can do whatever we choose to do.

Negative naysayers don’t dictate our futures. WE DO.

It was a long, hard fight for Rocky but you know what?

He did what nobody else thought he could.

Rocky went the distance. He went the distance because he ignored the naysayers, believed in himself, and worked his ass off..

And when that so-called “educational authority” the Principal didn’t believe in me it lite a fire under my ass.

It was a very long and hard fight but you know what?

Not only did I go on to graduate high school, I also graduated University with a DOUBLE major. And with each graduation in my minds eye I flipped the bird to my grade school principal.

That’s right. Screw them.

You, me and Rocky can do what we CHOOSE to do. We are the creators of our own destiny.

To this day being told I can’t do somthing is one of my greatest motivators.

I love proving people wrong about the limitations they try to place on MY abilities.

And you should feel the same.

So back to the 11% plus open rate…

Open rates are based on HTML emails. Only HTML emails can track whether an email has been open or not.

TEXT based emails cannot be tracked.

And since I send my emails in both HTML and TEXT, my readers who have their email preferences set to read emails in TEXT format did not get tracked as part of the 11%

And so in reality, my open rate was eve greater that 11%

But open rates like that took some doing.

I’ve been email marketing for over 15 years. And during that time I’ve learned a great deal about what works and what doesn’t work when it comes to the whole email thingy.

In fact, some might say that I wrote the book on email marketing. Because I did!

Back in 2006 I wrote the International #1 best-seller, Lucrative List Building. (That’s right, me. The guy they tried to label with a learning disability.)

Anyhoo, a lot has changed since then. List building and email marketing continues to evolve.

And like I mentioned earlier, most marketers are suffering greatly because of it.
