Take It Away
Have you ever owned a cat or a dog? If you said yes, have you ever noticed that they always seem to be on the wrong side of the door?
I don’t know about you but everytime I let my dog outside, not 5 minutes later she wants back in! And the 5 minutes later, she want back out! Sometimes this can go on all morning opening and closing the door for her. Have you ever experienced that? Pets always seem to be on the wrong side of the door and are constantly “knocking” because they want to get back in.
Well as it turns out, we humans are hardwired much the same way as our furry friends. That is, we are drawn to what’s on the other side of the door. In other words, we usually want what seems to be just out of our reach. We want what we can’t have!
So what does this have to do with increasing your prices?
Well, there’s a lot of psychology involved in sales. And by far one of the best ways to increase your price without customer resistance is to use what’s called the takeaway strategy.
The takeaway strategy is designed to stir up the fear of loss in your prospect. More specifically the fear of having what it is they want, taken away from them before they can get your hands on it.
There are a number of ways to deploy this strategy with great success. Let me share a few for you here.
Qualification Process – When making a high-ticket premium offer be certain to qualify who you will and who you will not work with. Expressly state that your prospects must meet specific qualifications before they can pay you to become a customer. By doing this you will attract your “dream clients” and repel those that would not be a good fit.
For example, I tell my prospects up front that I only work with highly motivated people who currently selling their own products or services. They also must be committed to increasing their profits and doing what it takes to make it happen.
I further explain that I do not work with people who are whiners, complainers, or blamers who don’t take responsibility for their actions or lack thereof.
Application Process – This works hand-in-hand with the qualification process taking it one step further. By requiring your prospects to complete and application in which they essentially sell you on why you should accept their business
Scarcity – Limiting access to your product or service based on it being available for a limited-time, or in limited quantity, spaces, or access is an extremely powerful psychological driver that encourages people to take action and buy now, before it is too late and they lose out.
When using this tactic it is imperative that you use it ethically and not like some slimy “used-car salesman”. In other words, whatever it is you are offering it must actually only by available in limited quantities or for a limited time. If it’s not, don’t say it is!
Here’s how I use it…
I offer group coaching in which I work closely with a maximum of 6 clients at a time. This is a real limited quantity because that really is the most I can comfortably work with at any one time.
Plus, my coaching starts and ends on specific dates. Therefore, those 6 spots are only available until a.) they are all sold out, or b.) the date has passed and I’ve started working with the group.
So as you can see, this is a real use of the scarcity tactic. And because it’s authentic, it works very well.
